3 things India need to do right in the T20 World Cup 2026 Final against New Zealand ft. Axar Patel

India are set to face New Zealand in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8. It’s a chance for the Men in Blue to defend their title, and they’ll need to be at their very best against a Kiwi side that’s proven to be a thorn in their side in past ICC events.

India haven’t been at their best tactically in the tournament so far. In the summit clash, Suryakumar Yadav and his men cannot afford to make any mistakes. New Zealand are known to raise their game under pressure and will undoubtedly be poised to take advantage of any strategic slip-ups.

India’s squad for the T20 World Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar.

New Zealand’s squad for the T20 World Cup: Tim Seifert (wk), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner (c), Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Devon Conway, Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi, Jacob Duffy.

On that note, here are three things India need to do right in their T20 World Cup 2026 final clash against New Zealand.

#3 Sanju Samson vs Matt Henry could decide the outcome of India’s batting

Sanju Samson’s role will once again be crucial, especially against Matt Henry, who’s been a reliable force for the Kiwis with the new ball. If Samson can get on top of Henry early, it will set the tone and allow the hosts to have solid matchup coverage over the course of their innings.

India need Samson to be assertive, particularly in the powerplay. If he can negate Henry’s impact, it’ll put added pressure on New Zealand’s spin-heavy bowling unit. Conversely, if he falls cheaply, India might struggle to gather momentum early on and could find themselves in the same predicament that haunted them before the right-hander entered the fray.

It’s a classic battle that could very well define the outcome of the match. Samson needs to be careful against the canny operator.

#2 Axar Patel needs to be deployed against Finn Allen and Tim Seifert

Axar Patel’s effectiveness with the ball in the powerplay could be key against New Zealand’s explosive openers, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. This duo can set the tone for their innings, and if allowed to flourish, they can derail India’s chances early.

Axar, with his left-arm spin, provides a variety that can disrupt the flow, especially if he mixes up his speeds and looks to generate appreciable inward drift with the new ball. India should look to unleash the spinner even earlier than usual, to target Allen and Seifert’s aggressive instincts.

If Axar can find a way to dismiss either opener, it could cause a ripple effect through New Zealand’s batting order. Just like he locked down Shai Hope two games ago, the underrated all-rounder could play a key role in India’s potential title defense.

#1 India need to persist with Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy

There have been reports that India could consider Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav as replacements from Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy respectively. However, the Men in Blue should certainly put their faith behind the two star men, who have been key to their T20I success in recent times.

Abhishek is a match-winner on any day and can take the game away from the opposition inside the powerplay. Despits his recent poor returns, he needs to be backed.

Varun, meanwhile, is still one of the best T20 spinners in the world. With Kuldeep having a slightly disappointing record against the Black Caps, the star leggie should be backed to find his mojo in the big game.
