Celtic are now ready to appoint a manager who plays “incredible football” as a successor to interim boss Martin O’Neill.
Hoops planning for life after O’Neill
The Hoops have their work cut out in the Scottish Premiership title race, as they still remain five points behind Hearts, but O’Neill has a fantastic opportunity to go out on a high regardless, having recently led his side to the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.
The Parkhead outfit edged past bitter rivals Rangers on penalties at Ibrox, although O’Neill expressed concern the result would be overshadowed by the post-match pitch invasion, saying: “That would be a worry for me.
“The fixture itself, although still a phenomenal fixture, had lost a bit of its lustre because the away fans or the full complement of away fans were not allowed in.
“I have no idea what might happen. I think today, with the crowd and our crowd there, to me, it was a proper Old Firm game in that sense. We will see what develops.”
Although the Glasgow giants could still win the title for the 14th time in the past 15 seasons, it has been a poor season by their usual standards, which means getting the next managerial appointment right is even more important.
According to a report from Sports Boom, Celtic are now ready to appoint Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou as O’Neill’s successor, given the job he has done in his opening season in Scotland, with the Steelmen currently sitting in fourth place.
There is a feeling Askou will land a ‘top job’ in the summer, off the back of Motherwell punching above their weight, and he is attracting attention from England, with Brighton and Fulham also named as interested parties.
Askou could bring exciting style of play to Parkhead
The Danish tactician has done a stellar job at Motherwell this season, with his side just five points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, and he has received plaudits from journalist Blair Malloy due to his exciting brand of football.
Although the former FC Copenhagen boss plays an attractive brand of football, Motherwell have also been very solid defensively this season, shipping just 20 Scottish Premiership goals, the fewest of any side.
The 43-year-old certainly knows what it takes to win league titles, having lifted the Superliga title with FC Copenhagen in the 2024-25 campaign, and the Faroe Islands Premier League with HB Torshavn in the 2019-20 season.
The legendary Manchester United pair had different opinions…
Askou, who prefers to implement a 4-2-3-1 system, could now be ready for a top job, and the Dane’s experience when it comes to competing for titles, coupled with his “incredible” style of play, means he could be the ideal appointment for Celtic.
