- Despite the fact that St. James’ Park is usually a fortress for Newcastle, their recent record there against Sunderland is poor. They have only won one of their last six games at home with the Black Cats, and that came back in 2010.
- Newcastle suffered a humiliating defeat to Barcelona in their Champions League tie this week, eventually falling 7-2 at the Camp Nou. However, their last Premier League game saw them beat Chelsea, and they are now in 9th, just six points off the top six.
- Sunderland, meanwhile, followed their FA Cup upset loss to Port Vale by slumping to a home defeat at the hands of Brighton last weekend. Despite their red-hot start, Regis Le Bris’ side are now in 13th, even if their Premier League status for next season is basically confirmed.
- Newcastle are currently the only Premier League side with a goal difference of zero, as they’ve both scored and conceded 43 goals. Interestingly, while this means they’ve scored 13 more than Sunderland, it also means they’ve conceded 8 more too.
- While Sunderland’s home form has been good this season, their away form has been very poor in comparison. They’ve only won three of their away matches, while losing seven, and have only won once on the road since October.
Newcastle United vs Sunderland Prediction
Newcastle were thumped by Barcelona on Wednesday, but in reality, their performance in the first half wasn’t bad at all – they only went to pieces defensively in the second half.
Sunderland, of course, do not offer nearly the same attacking threat as the Catalan giants, and so Eddie Howe’s side will probably fancy their chances here. Moreover, they will be desperate to get one over on their local rivals, particularly at home.
Given Sunderland have not been on the best run of form recently, losing their last two matches in a row, they may well find it hard to cope under the bright lights here.
