Former UFC welterweight Matt Brown has pushed back on the narrative surrounding Ronda Rousey’s return.
Brown addressed the growing attention around Rousey’s comments in the lead up to her bout with Gina Carano, suggesting the focus has shifted away from the fight itself. He indicated that while the event is likely to generate strong viewership, the overall substance of the matchup remains uncertain given both fighters’ long absence from competition.
He also questioned the tone of Rousey’s recent remarks and described her reactions as exaggerated and disconnected from the actual stakes of the fight. “Good old Ronda. Always giving us something to talk about. She just cracks me up at this point. I think it’s kind of comical. I don’t know if anybody actually takes her seriously. She seems like so angry about nothing sometimes and you’re just like can you just chill? You need to smoke some weed or something. Maybe she needs Xanax instead of weed. She just needs to take a chill pill.”

He added:
“I don’t think anyone’s buying the schtick. Nobody believes that she’s going to f*ck with Kayla Harrison if somehow that ever was to come to fruition. No one’s buying into this sh*t.”
Brown further suggested that the buildup feels more like a spectacle than a competitive contest, especially considering Carano’s extended time away from the sport.
Ronda Rousey comments spark response from Kayla Harrison’s camp
Ronda Rousey’s remarks at a recent press conference have reignited debate around her standing in women’s MMA and her comparison with current champion Kayla Harrison.
Rousey questioned Harrison’s impact and profile, drawing immediate attention across the sport. The comments were met with a strong response from Harrison’s manager Ali Abdelaziz. He highlighted her achievements across judo, PFL, and the UFC while dismissing comparisons between the two.
Abdelaziz took to X and wrote:
“Kayla Harrison is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, judo world champion, two-time PFL champion, and now a UFC champion. Ronda Rousey is an Olympic bronze medalist and former UFC champion, coming off two knockout losses. In my opinion, the resumes are not comparable. Good luck to everyone @KaylaH @ufc”
