Browns GM Andrew Berry gets honest about adding rookie Taylen Green to QB “competition” with Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson

The Cleveland Browns have added another quarterback to their stacked QB room. The Browns selected Taylen Green in the sixth round. Green arrives after wowing analysts at this year’s scouting combine.

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Barry gave an honest reason for adding another rookie quarterback to the team.

“With Taylen specifically, very mature young man, really strong makeup, and he has rare physical gifts, Barry said.

“He has size, he has elite speed. He has a big arm. You know, he’s going to need some polish with this game, but he has the work ethic and he has the acumen to do so.

“So we’re looking forward to adding him to the roster and adding him to the mix in terms of competition.”

Taylen Green had a phenomenal Combine. The Boise State and Arkansas product had a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and 43.5-inch vertical jump (best ever for a quarterback). He also measures out at 6-foot-6 and 227 lbs.

However, Green’s passing attributes leave a lot to be desired. He finished his collegiate career with a stat line of 9,662 passing yards, 59 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions. He added 35 rushing TDs for good measure.

Green now joins the Browns as their fourth-string quarterback. He’s behind Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart.

Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are vying for the QB1 spot in Cleveland

The starting quarterback job in Cleveland is there for the taking. Last year, the Browns started with Joe Flacco, pivoted to Dillon Gabriel, and ended up with Shedeur Sanders. The moves had limited success as the Browns ended the season with a 5-12 record.

Entering the 2026 season, it’s looking increasingly likely that the QB1 is either Sanders or Watson’s to lose. Shedeur Sanders is fresh off a mixed rookie season that saw him feature in the Pro Bowl as a replacement, while Watson hasn’t exactly raised the roof since his 2022 arrival. The duo is now in a make-or-break battle.

Then there’s Dillon Gabriel, fresh off a 10-game rookie season. There’s also speculation that the Browns could trade him away to give them additional draft consideration. Remember, they reduced their QB room last season by trading Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco for draft picks.

The Cleveland Browns haven’t made the playoffs since 2023. They’re looking to make some noise in the upcoming campaign and potentially figure out their quarterback situation. Expect some extra drama from draining camp and workouts.
