A Texas appeals court has temporarily paused The Onion’s takeover deal of Infowars, a right-wing platform started by popular conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. According to AP News, the Texas Third Court of Appeals approved an emergency motion proposed by Jones’ lawyers to temporarily block the transfer of Infowars assets to The Onion on April 29, 2026.
Infowars is currently facing liquidation to pay off the $1.4 billion default judgment granted to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy, after they filed a defamation lawsuit against Jones for alleging the shooting was a hoax.
On April 30, Alex Jones hosted his last Infowars show from his studio in Austin, which was shut down that night because a court-appointed receiver was no longer paying for rent, utilities, and electricity. The receiver was appointed in August 2025 to handle Jones’ assets and sell them to pay the judgment.
During his final show in Austin, Alex Jones played a clip of comedian Tim Heidecker, hired by The Onion as Infowars’ new creative director amid the takeover, reacting to the Texas court order temporarily putting the deal on hold. In the clip, Heidecker called Jones a “motherf**ker” and insisted that The Onion will acquire Infowars, adding:
“This motherf**ker Alex Jones somehow worked his way into the Texas Third Court of Appeals. These rats…postponing the transfer of the site until another judgment can come in or something. This was on track to happen… it has been temporarily derailed. We’re committed to moving forward, we’re already talking what that looks like. The short answer is, Infowars will be ours.”
Tim Heidecker detailed The Onion’s new plans for Alex Jones’ Infowars
Tim Heidecker and Ben Collins, the CEO of satirical media company The Onion, recently sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where they detailed their plans for Infowars and their opinions about Alex Jones. This interview was published on April 27, 2026, two days before the Texas court stayed the deal.
During the interview, Heidecker, who was named as the new Infowars’ creative director, divulged his plans for the company following the takeover, saying that the team planned to “enjoy laughing at” and “mocking” Alex Jones for a while. After that got “old and boring,” he said the company would move towards producing original content that won’t be “really connected to Infowars or the satirical side of that,” adding:
“We have a plan for the first few months: We’re going to enjoy laughing at him and mocking his world for a little while. I think that’s going to get old and boring for everybody, including us. After that, we’ll have the means and the technology and the attention to start producing original content that isn’t really connected to Infowars or the satirical side of that — just what we think is funny.”
He continued:
“We’ll start rolling it out under that brand. Eventually, let’s say in five years, you’re going to have to take a second to remember what Infowars was before we got involved.”
The comedian, who is one half of the absurdist duo Tim and Eric, also confirmed that The Onion planned on retaining the “Infowars” name, calling it a “fun” and “stupid” name that didn’t “mean anything except that it has this great story you can tell people.”
Meanwhile, another hearing regarding The Onion’s takeover of Infowars is scheduled for May 28.
