With James Morrison at the helm, life has certainly been rosier for West Bromwich Albion.
Mutter the name Eric Ramsay around the Hathorns and it’ll provoke a spine-chilling response. However, those days are now long gone.
Under their former midfielder, Albion only lost twice, picking up points in ten of their 12 matches. Sure, they were not soaring to dizzy heights but if they can enjoy a run like that at the beginning of next season, they will surely be in the play-off picture in May 2027.
Either way, it surely cannot get any worse than what fans were made to endure in 2025/26.
Positively, they’ve got the manager situation sorted and the next order of business is contracts and new signings.
The state of play on West Brom’s transfer activity
The Baggies have about a month to determine the core part of their squad heading into next season with contracts expiring at the conclusion of June.
Morrison and Co have already decided not to renew the contracts of Jed Wallace and Daryl Dike while goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith will also depart.
That said, the club are still in talks with strikers Karlan Grant and Josh Maja to renew their deals at the Hawthorns. At this moment in time, both of them will leave.
Considering they combined for just ten goals last term, perhaps the best port of call is just to let them depart. Yet, losing three strikers in one window would certainly not be ideal as far as recruitment is concerned.

Regardless of the situations surrounding Grant and Maja, they do need to sign a new centre-forward. Former loanee Lewis Dobbin has been put forward as one option, as has Ben Brereton Diaz at Southampton.
Goals did not come too frequently for West Brom this season. The Midlands outfit scored just 48 times, the fourth-worst record in the entire division behind Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United and Charlton Athletic.
Finding a new centre-forward, however, should not be the only priority.
Where West Brom need to strengthen this summer
All over the pitch. Is that a fair answer? Last season was riddled with problems and while finding a reliable source of goals is of utmost importance, Albion should also look towards bolstering the midfield ranks.
They aren’t exactly short of options in that position. Alex Mowatt will no doubt play an important role again and he could be joined by either Isaac Price or Jayson Molumby in the middle of the park.
That said, Price was preferred as more of a wide option towards the back end of last term when Mikey Johnston was injured. He’s also more of an attacking midfielder than a deep-lying player.
Thus, it makes sense to raise the ceiling of the squad as they go in search of promotion. Luckily, they have already been touted with signing two options who starred in the Championship throughout 2025/26.
The first of which is Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Year, Svante Ingelsson. One of few bright sparks in the Owls team as they suffered relegation to League One, he has already attracted a huge amount of interest.
Wednesday knocked back bids in January from Millwall and Portsmouth while West Brom, Preston North End and Sheffield United are also believed to hold an interest in the player.
As far as signings go, this would be a superb pick-up. One of the biggest plus points is Ingelsson’s ability to win duels with regularity. In the Championship this season, he won 4.34 per 90 minutes, more than any other Albion midfielder. Price ended the season with 3.51, Molumby registered 4.10 and Mowatt 3.78.
It’s safe to say the latter betters the Sheffield Wednesday star for attacking threat. Although they both scored once, Mowatt ended the term with four assists to Ingelsson’s none, while amassing 0.68 shots per 90 minutes to Ingelsson’s 0.48.
It’s from a defensive point of view where the Wednesday man represents an upgrade. He made 1.13 successful tackles per 90 to Mowatt’s 1.13 and Molumby’s 0.74.
All that said, the Owls star is not the only midfielder being linked with a move to the Midlands. Reports last week noted that the Baggies were one of the teams monitoring the situation surrounding Blackburn Rovers’ Sondre Tronstad who is due to become a free agent in four weeks time.
Currently out with a partial ACL tear, he was described as Rovers’ “best player” by journalist Elliott Jackson at the back end of last year, thus meaning Tronstad would be another significant signing for Albion.
Whether or not they’d sign both is up for debate. After all, their primary roles are as more defensive minded players. Either way, you could have a sensational double pivot on your hands here with Mowatt slightly more further forward and Price continuing to play on the wings.
The Rovers star was actually even better than Ingelsson when it came to duels, winning 5.51 per 90 minutes and making 2.53 tackles per 90. In the defensive area of the game, he’s better than any midfielder currently at Morrison’s disposal.
While the midfield should not be the biggest focus this summer, if players like Ingelsson and Tronstad are available, West Brom must ensure they are in the conversation to sign them.
