Third seed Ben Shelton will lock horns with Ethan Quinn in the second round of the Terra Wortmann Open 2026.
Shelton arrived in Halle on the heels of a title at the Boss Open in Stuttgart over the weekend, his first on grass as well. He faced lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego in his Halle opener, who replaced Nick Kyrgios in the draw. Shelton drew first blood in the opening set to go 4-2 up, only for Sonego to immediately get back on level terms.
Shelton ultimately captured the set courtesy of a break of serve in the 12th game. The American required only one break of serve in the second set to turn the match in his favor. He broke Sonego’s serve in the sixth game on his fourth break point. He held on to that advantage until the end to score a 7-5, 6-3 win.
Quinn kicked off his run in Berlin against former top 10 player Karen Khachanov. The Russian blitzed through the first set and claimed it for the loss of only one game. Quinn found his footing over the next two sets. He broke Khachanov’s serve once in each of the next two sets to complete a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win.

Shelton’s triumph in Stuttgart last week made him the first American man to win a title on all three surfaces in the same season since Sam Querrey did the same in 2010. Shelton also won all of his matches in Stuttgart in three sets. Thus, his straight sets win over Sonego in Halle was a pleasant change of pace.
