Why are the Jaguars extending Brenton Strange’s deal?

Brenton Strange is coming off a career-best 2025 season that saw him catch 46 passes for 540 yards and three touchdowns. The 2023 second-round pick has earned the extension with Jacksonville after ascending the role as the team’s No. 1 tight end.

The Jaguars moved on from Evan Engram at the end of the 2024 season, requiring Strange to step up. He has since strengthened his claim to the role of the Jaguars’ leading tight end.

He put up impressive numbers last season despite missing five games with a hip injury. The Jaguars felt his absence, however. They went 2-3 in his absence and averaged almost eight fewer points without him on the offense.

The move by the Jaguars to seal his extension is proactive, putting them ahead of any competition that might later arise. Moreover, the tight end market is almost ripe for an explosion with a wave of elite tight ends almost due for massive extensions.

This cadre of tight ends include Sam LaPorta, Tucker Kraft, and Brock Bowers. The Atlanta Falcons similarly extended Kyle Pitts’ deal just a day before Brenton Strange penned his extension.

The Falcons extended Pitts’ contract for three years valued at $54 million. The deal has set the pace for what the next tier of tight ends can demand.
