Borussia Dortmund give Celtic clear Cole Campbell transfer stance

Celtic are now working on a deal for Borussia Dortmund forward Cole Campbell, having identified him as a ‘clear’ target.

Martin O’Neill‘s side are ramping up their pursuit of a new right-winger, with Motherwell star Elijah Just also among the targets, off the back of the 47-cap New Zealand international scoring three goals in as many games at the World Cup.

Campbell, who is eligible to be selected for both the USA and Iceland, isn’t quite as experienced, at just 20-years-old, making only seven senior appearances for Borussia Dortmund before being shipped out on loan to Hoffenheim last season.

The Texas-born winger is yet to establish himself at first-team level, appearing just five times for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, but the Hoops are now looking to offer him a route into senior football.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

Celtic are keen on bolstering their attacking options, and they are well-placed to seal a deal for Just, who registered 15 goal involvements in last season’s Scottish Premiership. In truth, the Motherwell star may be capable of making more of an instant impact, whereas Campbell could be one for the future, given his limited experience.

Finances

Despite failing to make the grade at Dortmund thus far, the German side are still planning to hold out for £6m. As such, the Hoops are weighing up an initial loan move.

Insight

Although the youngster is yet to make his mark in senior football, he flourished for Dortmund at youth level, picking up 12 goals and 14 assists in 35 matches for the U19 side. Scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the American as a “flamboyant” winger, while also praising him for his pace and dribbling skills.

Impact

Should Celtic decide to pursue a move, they may have to shelve plans to sign Just, which may be an error, considering the New Zealander has already proven himself in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic working on deal for Cole Campbell

According to a report from Football Insider, Celtic are now considering bringing Campell in on loan, given that they are unwilling to pay Dortmund’s £6m asking price.

The Bundesliga giants are very much open to an exit, and they are happy with a permanent deal or a loan, which suggests a move to Parkhead could be possible.

Elijah Just should be Celtic’s top right-winger target

Campbell had a difficult spell on loan at Hoffenheim last season, appearing for just 74 minutes across five Bundesliga appearances, during which time he failed to register a single goal or assist.

Just, on the other hand, has proven himself on the grandest of stages, netting two goals in New Zealand’s 2-2 World Cup opener against Iran, before going on to find the net in a 5-1 defeat against Belgium.

Moreover, the 26-year-old is already proven in the Scottish Premiership, registering seven assists last season, which was more than any Celtic player, barring Kieran Tierney.

With that in mind, the Motherwell winger should be Celtic’s top target, and Campbell would be a far riskier addition to O’Neill’s squad.
