Former New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson powered through an injured pinky during the team’s recent championship run. Robinson did not allow an injury to hinder his availability for the Knicks and provided major help in the 2026 NBA playoffs.
On Sunday, he had a lengthy post on his Facebook account, revealing how he suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal in his right hand. Robinson said that it happened after the Knicks celebrated their Eastern Conference championship win against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Thanks for the submission!
“Upon returning to New York, I received an unexpected phone call, and my family members contacted me, informing me that my youngest brother had been involved in a car accident,” Robinson wrote. “I did not see the messages until I arrived home late that night. As the eldest sibling, I felt a deep sense of concern, and I immediately went into panic mode.

“I began returning calls and texts, and when I FaceTimed my brother, I thought he was deceased. He was wearing a neck brace, unresponsive, and not speaking. I broke down in tears, feeling like a failure for not being able to protect my siblings. Being 910 miles away, I felt helpless. In a moment of frustration, I banged my hand on my truck.”
Before the Knicks started the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, Mitchell Robinson had to undergo surgery. The big man did not sustain an injury during practice, according to the team, but they did not offer any other information.
Fans were concerned about his availability, since it was the most important playoff series of his career. Fortunately for the Knicks, Robinson suited up in all five games against the Spurs. During the five-game stretch, the big man averaged 3.6 points and 5.6 rebounds.
He also provided the physicality and toughness against Victor Wembanyama.
The Knicks Secured Their Mitchell Robinson Replacement
After winning the title, the Knicks did not bring Mitchell Robinson back to the roster. This ended his eight-year tenure with the franchise, as he signed a three-year, $47.4 million contract with the Boston Celtics.
After Robinson left the team, New York secured their backup center in Andre Drummond, who signed a one-year, $3.9 million deal. On Saturday, media personality Mika Ortiz interviewed Drummond after he joined the Knicks, and the two-time All-Star addressed joining the reigning champions.
“I think I’m just what they need right now,” the veteran star said. “You know, getting rid of Mitchell Robinson was a huge loss for them. I bring in a similar talent, similar energy, but you know, I’m a veteran. I’ve been around for a long time, I know what it takes to win.”
The New York native has a chance to play for his hometown team and serve as a key acquisition for the Knicks.
