Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark had an on-court altercation with Connecticut Sun guard Saniya Rivers during Wednesday’s game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Late in the third quarter of the Fever’s 123-88 win, Clark was fouled by Rivers near the 3-point line as she was about to set up the offense. The two players then engaged in a heated verbal exchange before receiving double technical fouls. Indiana led 95-67 at that point.
After the game, Rivers posted on Threads in what many social media users interpreted as a response to criticism from Clark’s fans:
“When you argue with an ignorant mf, you become an ignorant mf. And my momma ain’t raise no ignorant mf, so ima let y’all IGNORANT MFS have it💯🤝🏾.”
On the same post, Rivers also replied to a Threads user to clarify her earlier comments.
“Nah, what’s unfortunate is that I’m not the only one that feels this way about their fanbase,” Rivers wrote. “And as far as my intentions..the only intention I had behind my post last night was that ima play til the end. Win, lose or draw.
“Y’all took it amongst yourselves to involve race, come at my character and repeatedly tell me that I’m trying to play the ‘victim’ in a situation that was never that f***ing serious🤣. Neither one of us deserved the tech, there’s no ‘one-sided’ beef, just basketball.”
Rivers was active on social media after the game, with another Threads post being widely reshared on X.
The Sun selected Rivers with the No. 8 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. In her second WNBA season, the 6-foot-1 guard has started 12 of the 23 games she played, averaging 7.0 points in 22.4 minutes per game.

During her postgame media availability on Wednesday, Caitlin Clark was asked about the incident with Saniya Rivers.
“She said she was locking me up, so I said, ‘scoreboard,’ and the ref didn’t like that,” Clark said. “I’m never gonna back down. … I think just continue to try to control your emotions the best you can. That intensity and that fire is what makes me me, but also knowing my team needs me and finding a good balance of that.”
After receiving her seventh technical foul of the season on Wednesday, Clark is now on the brink of being suspended.
Under WNBA rules, a player receives a one-game suspension after their eighth technical foul in a season. Each subsequent technical foul results in an additional one-game suspension.
