Sugar season 2 continues with its penultimate episode, What Else Can You Do?, which confirms that Ray Vega dies after a violent confrontation with John Sugar in the desert. After multiple attempts to rescue Danny through negotiation fail, Sugar carries out a final plan that results in a deadly fight with Vega.
At the same time, the episode expands the mystery surrounding Senator Pavich’s secret project by revealing new details about the recurring four-circle symbol and its connection to experimental technology. The closing moments also introduce another unanswered question when Charlotte discovers the same symbol among Sugar’s belongings, setting up the remaining conflict before the season finale.
Sugar season 2 episode 7 recap: Did Sugar kill Ray Vega?
John Sugar spends most of Sugar season 2 episode 7 trying to figure out how to rescue Danny nonviolently. He goes to the head of the cartel, Sergey Ojeda, in the hopes that Vega will do as he says. Vega takes charge after Sergey’s death in an airplane disaster, destroying that strategy.
Afterwards, Sugar presents Vega with a chance to depart with his family, new identities, and financial support. Instead, Vega wants Ji Moon in return for Danny, which she flatly rejects.
Sugar covertly takes Danny’s place before their desert rendezvous, but Ji subsequently offers to surrender. Vega secretly puts Sugar in the back seat and drives away, completely oblivious to the switch. After a car wreck, they continue fighting until Sugar kills Vega by strangling him with his tie. Vega and Sugar both escape the incident.
After all other avenues have been exhausted, Sugar finally turns to violence, as shown in the episode. That effort is reflected in his introductory narration, when he states that he tried everything before coming to the conclusion that Vega knew only violence. But Sugar’s breakdown after the fight shows the emotional toll of killing Vega.
With his last words, “I told you,” he alludes to the cautions he issued to Vega on multiple occasions before their confrontation.
What is the four-circle symbol?
Professor Stanley Ondaajte learns Sugar’s real identity as he inquires about the four-connected-circle drawing. According to Stanley, the symbol stands for tropospheric nodes, which are a component of a form of experimental technology that aims to decrease emissions of greenhouse gases, increase agricultural yields, and mitigate the effects of severe weather. Additionally, he expresses concern that the project may cause significant changes to natural systems.
Sugar season 2 episode 7 moves away from organized crime with the revelation that Pavich is involved in a technology that could have global consequences. Additionally, it clarifies the reasons behind the project’s involvement from multiple groups.
Nevertheless, important problems have not been resolved. The episode leaves viewers hanging on the reasons behind Pavich’s decision to keep the technology a secret and the significance of the four-circle symbol in relation to Sugar’s larger research; these questions will be addressed in the season finale.
What did Charlotte discover?
After the episode ends, Sugar goes back to his hotel and finds a listening device in his vehicle keys. This proves that Vega had been following him the whole time. How Sugar put his rescue plan into action using that surveillance is also explained in the reveal.
As the credits roll, the spotlight shifts to Charlotte, who discovers a four-circle sketch in one of Sugar’s jacket pockets. That subject remains unresolved since the show doesn’t reveal whether or not she recognizes the sign or her connection to it.
Returning in this episode is Peg, who questions Sugar on his comprehension of the repercussions of eliminating Vega. Sugar emphasizes the personal cost of his decision by responding that he did what was necessary.
