With the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta almost around the corner, kicking off on August 21, the latest title is set to drop for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and supported PC platforms. However, this is not the only major change coming to the CoD franchise, as Warzone is also being phased out on older consoles.
As Activision mentioned in its blog, the company has already started reducing the services offered for Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from June 4, with support for the game on these platforms set to end later this year.
In this detailed article, we will discuss potential reasons for the shutdown of CoD: Warzone on older consoles, along with the different stages of phasing out support.

What can be the probable reasons for Call of Duty: Warzone shutting down on older consoles

As mentioned earlier, Call of Duty: Warzone is being gradually withdrawn from older-generation consoles, with the process already underway. However, Activision has not officially stated the exact reasons behind the decision. Considering the age of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One hardware and the continued shift toward newer platforms, hardware limitations could be one of the probable factors behind the move. Here are some possible reasons:
- More than a decade-old hardware: The PS4 and Xbox One are now more than a decade old. Considering their age, the hardware may have limitations when handling newer game technologies.
- Focus on newer platforms: Activision is increasingly focusing on current-generation consoles and PC for its newer experiences. As you know, MW4 is also not being released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. All this indicates the franchise’s shift away from older hardware.
- Technical limitations: As Warzone continues to receive new features and updates, supporting the game across both older and newer hardware can present additional technical challenges.
- Preparing for the future: Moving CoD: Warzone away from older platforms could allow developers to focus ogon newer supported hardware. That way, they can optimise future updates and provide a more consistent experience across supported platforms.
What are the service change stages for Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?
On June 4, Warzone was removed from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One digital storefronts. Therefore, new downloads are no longer available. However, players who already have the game in their library can continue playing it.
On June 25, the Call of Duty: Warzone in-game store was removed on old-gen consoles. But players can continue playing Warzone on these platforms until the launch of Modern Warfare 4 Season 1. However, all other CoD titles that were originally released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will remain available to play.
