Newcastle in talks to hijack £30m Sunderland target alongside Fernandez-Pardo

Newcastle United are in talks to sign two new attackers for Matthias Jaissle, with a deal for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo close to completion.

The Magpies have already invested heavily in their squad, but their work in the final third may not yet be complete. Jaissle admitted after Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur that the club would remain active during the final days of the window, and the club are closing in on a £55m deal for Belgium international winger Fernandez-Pardo.

It has been a rather eventful summer transfer window at St James’ Park. Three star players in Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes all departed, but PIF have reinvested by spending more than £200m themselves, with more to come in the next 24 hours.

Fernandez-Pardo has been the major target, but Newcastle could bring in a second late addition alongside him, given that Nick Woltemade is expected to depart.

The Germany international has struggled to nail down a starting role in his natural position on Tyneside, and with Yoane Wissa finding some excellent form under Jaissle his opportunities are only set to become more limited, with a loan move to Juventus now expected to go through this week.

Newcastle now in talks to sign Matias Soule

According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle are also in talks over a potential deal for AS Roma attacker Matias Soule. The 23-year-old, thought to be valued at around £30m, has been a player of interest to Sunderland this summer, with the Black Cats in talks of their own and readying a late offer.

However, Newcastle are now in for the Argentine, with Roma believed to be open to a sale for the right price.

Part of Soule’s appeal is his ability to operate in several attacking positions. Naturally a right winger, where he can cut inside onto his stronger left foot, Soule has also played centrally as a number ten or second striker, and this ability to act more as a playmaker behind the forward line is something the squad currently lacks – and something not offered by Fernandez-Pardo.

Soule also produced seven goals and eight assists last season, while his overall Serie A record stands at 36 direct goal contributions from 112 appearances.

Roma paid more than €25m to sign him permanently in 2024, with the overall package eventually worth around €30m, so they would be making a small profit if Soule moved to England for around £30m.

The question now is whether or not Newcastle’s late attempt to deny Sunderland one of their primary summer targets is enough.
