Jessica Pegula experienced a bizarre interaction with a spectator at the 2026 Wuhan Open during her closely contested battle with Jelena Ostapenko. The American drew attention for her reaction to the fan’s autograph request.
No. 2 seed Pegula faced Ostapenko in her opening match at the WTA 1000 event. The American made a strong start to the contest by claiming the opening set 6-2 and secured an early break in the second set to take a 3-2 lead. At that juncture, Ostapenko called for a medical timeout, giving Pegula the opportunity to confer with her coach on the sidelines.
Thanks for the submission!
However, their conversation was unexpectedly interrupted when a fan approached Pegula for an autograph. The American politely declined since the match was still underway before cracking up over the fan’s unusual move.
The match resumed after Ostapenko received treatment and had her right arm strapped. Although Pegula had the chance to seal a straight-sets victory with three match points in the second-set tiebreak, the Latvian fought back impressively to force a decider. Ostapenko went on to dominate the third set, claiming a 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 victory.
“I had a lot of pain” – Jelena Ostapenko opens up after upsetting Jessica Pegula at the Wuhan Open

After pulling off her stellar upset over Jessica Pegula at the Wuhan Open, Jelena Ostapenko opened up about the pain she experienced in her arm and shared that she had to fight for every point from then on.
“I had a lot of pain in my arm, then I took a painkiller and then I was fighting for every single point,” she said during her on-court interview.
The Latvian also highlighted her stellar turnaround after losing all three of her tour-level matches during the North American hardcourt swing, expressing satisfaction with her approach on the court.
“I feel I’m in the right zone now and I feel like I’m making the right decisions. Sometimes when I have to go for the shots I’m going for it, sometimes — even when I play very aggressive — but today some points I was just trying to keep the ball in play and wait for the good ball to attack,” she said in her post-match press conference.
Up next, Ostapenko is set to take on Leylah Fernandez in the third round of the WTA 1000 event. If the Latvian emerges victorious, she will face either Karolina Muchova or Diana Shnaider in the fourth round.
