Recently, New York Times reporter John Carreyrou released the findings of an 18-month-long investigation to uncover the true identity of the Bitcoin founder, who goes by the famous pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
It has been 17 years since Bitcoin was first created in January 2009, and the true identity of its creator has always remained a hot topic. With this new investigation, the main name that came to light is Adam Back. However, Adam has directly denied being Satoshi, which means we do not definitively know the BTC creator’s identity yet.

Is Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity Adam Back?
First, let us be clear about who Adam Back is. He is a famous Bitcoin developer and the CEO of Blockstream, a leading Bitcoin and blockchain technology company focused on enhancing the BTC ecosystem.
Why was his name involved, you may wonder? The investigation relied heavily on circumstantial findings, such as matching writing styles and overlapping online activities. Meaning, when Satoshi was active after releasing the Bitcoin white paper, Adam was inactive. Mysteriously, the moment Satoshi disappeared from the public eye, Adam became active again. These types of coincidental findings were accumulated, leading to the assumption that Adam Back is Satoshi Nakamoto. However, there is no solid proof.
Soon after his name was dragged into the spotlight, Adam took to his X handle to deny the claims. He stated directly, “I am not Satoshi,” and further explained that from 1992 onwards, his primary focus has been cryptography, secure communication, online privacy, and electronic cash. In fact, his work led to the creation of Hashcash, which directly inspired Bitcoin.
He further stated that he himself does not know Satoshi’s true identity. According to him, this is actually a great thing, since no single entity controls this massively popular cryptocurrency. It remains a truly decentralized new asset class that is mathematically limited to exactly 21 million coins, and as of 2026, 19.96 million Bitcoins have already been mined.

In conclusion, we still do not know the real face behind the creation of Bitcoin. Until solid proof comes to light, we cannot simply assume anyone is the true creator of this revolutionary digital currency.
