“I don’t blame you… the weather is pretty great”

US President Donald Trump has expressed his gratitude to Lionel Messi for choosing to join Inter Miami over other clubs, citing the weather as a factor. The Argentina international is in his third year with the Herons, having moved to the MLS in the summer of 2023.

Messi made the trip to the White House, where he was hosted by the president alongside his Inter Miami teammates and staff as the 2025 MLS champions. There, president Trump thanked the 38-year-old for turning down offers from Europe and Saudi Arabia to join the MLS side, hailing him for a record-extending 47th career title.

“Coach Mascherano became one of the few managers to win the MLS Cup in his very first season. And Leo claimed the 47th trophy of his incredible career — the most of all time. Can you imagine that?

Leo is also the reigning FIFA World Cup MVP. You could have gone anywhere in the world, chosen any team — but you chose Miami. I don’t blame you… the weather is pretty great. Thank you for coming to this country”, he said.

Lionel Messi arrived in Miami after spending two years in France with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He turned down an offer to extend his contract with the French giants and turned down a huge offer from Saudi Arabia, choosing to continue his career in the USA.

Messi has been a hit since moving to the MLS, becoming the first player in history to win the league’s MVP award in successive seasons. He has led his side to win four trophies in his time at the club, and has become the leading scorer in Inter Miami‘s history.

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami learn Leagues Cup opponents

Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates have learned of their opponents in the group stage of the Leagues Cup this year. The Herons will be hoping to reclaim the title they last won in 2023 when the tournament kicks off in August.

Inter Miami will face Atletico San Luis in their first game in the competition on August 5th at their new home, the Nu Stadium. Lionel Messi and co will then face CF Monterrey three days later at the same venue before hosting Club Leon in their final group game on August 12th.

Javier Mascherano‘s side will hope to compete on multiple fronts this year, having made significant additions to their squad during the off-season. The Herons have won a major trophy in each of the last three seasons, and will hope to continue that trend this year.
