Steven Gerrard says he’s ‘missing’ one ex-Liverpool star, urges club to re-sign him after his showing in UCL

Steven Gerrard has said he ‘wouldn’t mind’ if Liverpool re-sign Luis Diaz, insisting that he is ‘missing’ the Colombia international.

Diaz left Anfield for Bayern Munich last summer and has been in sensational form for the Bundesliga giants, having notched up 23 goals and 18 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. He played a key role in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Tuesday’s quarter-final clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring his team’s opener.

Meanwhile, the Reds have endured a topsy-turvy 2025/26 campaign, and their attack appears to have been weakened by Diaz’s departure. Speaking on TNT Sports after Bayern defeated Real Madrid, Gerrard stated that he would love to see Michael Olise at Liverpool before adding that he hopes his former side can bring Diaz back to Anfield.

“But, yes, would I love him at Liverpool. And you know what, I wouldn’t mind Diaz back as well. I’m missing him, I’m missing him,” Gerrard said.

Diaz joined the Reds from Porto in 2022 for a reported €49 million fee. During his three seasons at the Merseyside club, he scored 41 goals and provided 23 assists in 148 appearances across all competitions.

Liverpool were not wrong for selling Diaz – Jamie Carragher

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher does not think the club made a mistake selling Diaz, although he acknowledged they miss him. For Carragher, his former club made a good decision cashing in on the player, noting that they bought him for £40 million and sold him for £70nmillion to Bayern, insisting that it was a good bargain.

Asked if his former side were wrong to sell Diaz, Carragher said on CBS Sports:

“No. They miss him as a player, 100 per cent, there’s no doubt, and that was always going to be the case, he was a really good player for Liverpool. But sometimes you get presented deals as a club and at the time that was a good deal for Liverpool.

“Liverpool I think bought Luis Diaz for £40 million, they had him for four seasons maybe, he was due for a new contract, he’d been on the same contract since he came, so he wasn’t on huge wages and the next one would have put him on a big contract and Liverpool would have had him until his early 30s, which is probably not what they wanted ideally.”

The former Reds defender added that the club capitalized on Bayern’s desperation for a player and said he would not criticise them for the decision.
