AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric is set to undergo surgery after suffering a facial fracture.
Modric played 79 minutes on Sunday as Milan were held to a goalless draw by Juventus at San Siro, but was forced off after a clash of heads with Manuel Locatelli, with subsequent tests revealing a fractured cheekbone.
The Croatia international has been a mainstay in the Milan side since joining from Real Madrid last summer, making 33 appearances in Serie A.
He has scored two goals and provided three assists for the Rossoneri, who sit third in Serie A and are primed for a return to Champions League football.
AC Milan confirm Modric cheekbone fracture
But they may have to be without Modric as they look rubber stamp Champions League qualification, with a trip to Sassuolo next up on Sunday.
“Tests performed today revealed a fracture of his left cheekbone that will require surgery, scheduled for a few hours’ time. Further details will be announced after the operation,” said Milan in a statement.
Modric is also set to be a part of Croatia’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which will likely be the last for the 40-year-old.
He was player of the tournament in 2018 as Croatia reached the final but lost 4-2 to France.
Croatia have been drawn in Group L in the expanded 48-team World Cup. They open their tournament against England on June 17 before taking on Panama and Ghana.
