Fernandez replacement holds ’emergency meeting’ with Chelsea transfer decision ‘imminent’

Chelsea are moving towards a historic sale as Enzo Fernández closes in on Man City.

The Argentina midfielder’s future has dominated the final weeks of the window after Enzo Maresca identified him as a target for his City project.

Fernandez worked under Maresca at Stamford Bridge and is keen on renewing that relationship in Manchester, with Fabrizio Romano and others reporting that the player had reached a verbal understanding with City over personal terms.

Chelsea attempted to end the uncertainty before the season began.

They set City a deadline in the middle of August to meet their £12 0million valuation. That point passed without a bid, leading Chelsea to expect Fernandez would remain for the campaign.

City refused to abandon the pursuit, though.

Club-to-club negotiations have accelerated, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that an agreement in principle has been reached for around £121 million.

The payment structure reportedly still requires work, so the transfer cannot yet be treated as done.

Fernandez is expected to sign a five-year contract, including the option for another season if the final stages are negotiated.

Chelsea have protection because his existing deal at Stamford Bridge runs until 2032. They also paid Benfica a British-record £106.8 million package to sign him in January 2023.

A sale near the reported figure would deliver a profit while giving Xabi Alonso a midfield problem.

Fernandez can dictate possession, progress the ball through pressure and contribute further forward. Chelsea cannot remove those qualities without preparing a solution.

Roma’s Manu Kone has been discussed, but Gian Piero Gasperini does not want to lose the France international so late in the window.

Bournemouth have also maintained that Alex Scott is unavailable, and that has pushed Lamine Camara towards the centre of Chelsea’s deadline-day plans.

The Blues submitted a £39 million offer for the Monaco midfielder. That proposal was rejected, with the French club reportedly seeking closer to £52 million.

Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri has now reported a significant development.

Camara is attending an emergency meeting with his agent, Monaco head coach Filipe Luís and the club’s sporting director.

A decision on whether the 22-year-old will be allowed to join Chelsea is now expected imminently.

Camara joined Monaco from Metz in July 2024 and remains contracted until June 2029. He came through Génération Foot in Senegal before moving to France.

Camara was also named CAF Young Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, reflecting how quickly his reputation developed.

He would give Alonso energy, defensive aggression and forward passing in central midfield. However, he is still developing and would not arrive as a complete copy of Fernandez.

Chelsea’s preferred sequence appears clear: secure a replacement, then release Fernandez to City.

Tavolieri’s update suggests the first part of that plan is approaching a decision, but Monaco’s final approval remains essential.
