As Mike Tannenbaum is aware, Patrick Mahomes has terrorized the AFC for most of his career. However, a disastrous 2025 outing that began at the Super Bowl in New Orleans has left questions about the team’s ability to bounce back quickly. The team has made moves to try to do so, but Tannenbaum was not sold.
He explained why in a Friday “Get Up” video clip posted on X, citing three main reasons, including Mahomes’s health.

“The Kansas City Chiefs will miss the playoffs for a few reasons, starting at quarterback,” he said. “(There’s) some uncertainty about (if) Patrick Mahomes will be ready to go from Day 1. Secondly, they lack explosiveness at receiver. Last year, they were 16th in the league in yards per pass attempt. Some questions Rashee Rice, will he be ready to go?

“Thirdly, at corner, they lost two great corners in Jalen Watson and Trent McDuffie. They did draft Mansoor Delane, re-sign L’Jarius Sneed, but for a great Kansas City Chiefs team, (it is) unusual to have three important question marks.”
The Chiefs went 6-11 and posted the lowest winning percentage of Andy Reid’s tenure since he joined the team in 2013. It was also the first time the team didn’t win the AFC West since the Broncos won the division in 2015.
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid enter potential make-or-break moment

Another reason Kansas City might be in trouble is the increased difficulty in the AFC West. Aside from a botched last-second go-ahead field goal, Bo Nix has never lost to the Chiefs. The Los Angeles Chargers have not been a guaranteed win in recent years, either.
Fernando Mendoza’s arrival has also added some potential backbone to the Raiders in addition to the arrival of Super Bowl champion Klint Kubiak.
2025 could be looked at as a one-time aberration resulting from an exhausting run of three straight Super Bowls if the Chiefs can rebound. However, if Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid can’t bounce back in 2026 and create a pattern of losing, general manager Brett Veach will have to ask himself whether the duo is broken.
It only took Bill Belichick two consecutive losing seasons to get the axe after roughly two decades of domination. Can Reid afford to take the hit of another down year after a much shorter run of excellence?
