Newcastle United fans will be glad to see the back of the 2025/26 Premier League season when it officially wraps up later today.
It’s a trip to the capital for the Magpies masses on a sunny Sunday afternoon, as Eddie Howe‘s men take on Fulham, hoping to close out a bumpy campaign – which has seen them lose 15 league games – by picking up a 14th Premier League victory.
The Toon’s hopes of pushing into Europe have been extinguished by their poor goal difference, too, when weighed up against the likes of Chelsea, with a concerning 53 goals leaked heading into the showdown at Craven Cottage.
With Kieran Trippier walking away from St James’ Park this summer, as well, Newcastle will surely be on the hunt for defensive reinforcements.

Attacking upgrades will also be needed after an equally frustrating season in front of goal on Tyneside.
Newcastle now in talks to sign new striker
Losing a striker of Alexander Isak’s potency was always going to hurt Newcastle, after the Swede had powered home a frightening 23 goals last season in the Premier League, from only 34 outings.
While they did bank £125m for him, they didn’t go out into the market and grab a replacement who could fill the void left behind by the Stockholm-born attacker effectively, with Nick Woltemade – unless he scores at Fulham – bowing out of his debut season with a weak eight league goals next to his name.
William Osula has stepped up in recent matches, with seven league strikes amassed from only 27 clashes. Still, he is far too raw to be the main marksman Howe can depend on, with a report from TEAMTalk suggesting that the Tyneside giants have held talks to snap up Juventus striker Jonathan David, to hand Howe more options up top.
Several Premier League clubs have been contacted regarding the loan availability of the Canadian, with Newcastle assessing their forward areas, ahead of the transfer window reopening.
Newcastle could win themselves an upgrade on a hit-and-miss Woltemade if David were to put pen to paper on a move to England this summer, despite the ex-Lille striker enduring a difficult season in front of goal, himself, in Serie A.
Why David would be a big upgrade on Woltemade
Indeed, the elephant in the room is that David is about to call time on what has been a lacklustre season in Turin, with only six goals picked up in Serie A action from 34 appearances.
Woltemade has more goals, despite grumbles surrounding his performances at St James’ Park.
Yet, while the German would join the ranks last summer off the back of a breakout goalscoring campaign in the Bundesliga, and he does have a slightly weightier goal tally this season, David would be upping and leaving Italy with a more concrete reputation, considering his prior heroics when previously plying his trade in France.
Indeed, when he was still at Lille, David was noted as being “one of the best STs in the world” by Canadian football expert and podcaster Tony Mariano, and for good reason.
A stunning 87 Ligue 1 strikes would fall into David’s lap when lining up for Les Dogues from 178 encounters, with a staggering 2022/23 campaign ending with him picking up 28 goal contributions from only 37 outings. Woltemade has just 31 career goals, in stark contrast.
His goal numbers would never fall below the 13 mark when calling Ligue 1 home, meaning Newcastle would surely be confident that the 75-time Canada international would hit the ground running in England, if a move were to get over the line, as he has proven himself to be far more lethal and unerring in front of goal than Woltemade.
With a further 37 goals under his belt in Belgium for KAA Gent, and 12 career goals put away in the Champions League, David will hope he can resoundingly show the Newcastle faithful that his stint in Turin to date is just an unfortunate blip.
He would certainly push Woltemade out of the first team if he were to arrive, with 51 career assists also making the lofty striker’s well-known eye for an assist look weak.
While he hasn’t set the world alight at Juventus, his Old Lady manager, Luciano Spalletti, has been vocal in praising his passing range, stating that David is “capable of linking up with his teammates anywhere on the field.”
On a loan basis, Newcastle could strike gold by landing the Juventus number 30, as they would potentially secure themselves a big upgrade on Woltemade, one who will be keen to fight it out for a starting spot as Howe’s lone marksman.
He’s a bigger talent than Gordon: Newcastle discussing move to sign £25m star
Newcastle have already set their sights on an “exciting Gordon replacement”.
