NFL analyst Colin Cowherd blasts claim that Sean McVay was unaware of Ty Simpson draft plans after rookie QB’s latest comment

Sports commentator Colin Cowherd does not believe in the narrative that Rams coach Sean McVay was unaware of the team’s plans to use their first-round pick on Ty Simpson.

On Wednesday’s episode of his eponymous show, he discussed the rookie quarterback’s recent comments and how they invalidate the claims that Sean McVay was unhappy about getting the former Alabama quarterback with the 13th pick.

“I would not buy into this narrative,” Cowherd said. “Ty Simpson came out yesterday, the Bama quarterback, and said Sean and he and the Rams had long hour conversations before tthe draft. I thought the stories were so silly.

“Sean McVay’s fingerprints are not only all over the play sheet, they’re all over the organization. … He became the youngest coach in t he history of the league. You don’t think he knows how to work a room. You don’t think Sean McVay, you don’t think he went there, had no idea what was happening. It’s just because some of you media people can’t plan a seven-year wedding anniversary dinner doesn’t mean he can’t draft a quarterback.”

Cowherd’s comments come after Ty Simpson’s appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Amber & Ian” show on Monday. He initially claimed he did not have an extensive pre-draft process with the Rams after they selected him with the 13th overall pick.

However, the quarterback later revealed that he had some secret meetings with the team and coach Sean McVay.

“We tried to keep this under wraps as long as we could,” Simpson said as per ESPN. “It was something to where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to make it private and didn’t want people to know that they were interested.

“So, I had some secret meetings with Coach McVay, and I was just trying to be on script and do what everybody told me and not to tell anybody.”

Sean McVay went viral for his post-draft press conference, where he allegedly did not look amused with picking Ty Simpson in the first round.

Sean McVay clears the air on Matthew Stafford’s future after Rams draft Ty Simpson

The Rams already have veteran Matthew Stafford as the team’s starting quarterback. After the 2025 season, he announced his decision to return for the 18th year in the league during the NFL Honors in February.

During last Thursday’s post-draft press conference, Sean McVay highlighted that they still plan to continue with Stafford despite drafting Ty Simpson.

“Let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team,” McVay said. “You get address the backup quarterback. We’ve got Stetson (Bennett). We’ve talked about the importance of Jimmy (Garoppolo).”

After joining the team in 2021 following a trade from the Lions, Matthew Stafford led the Rams to glory during Super Bowl LVI. Last season, he helped the team make it to the NFC Championship game, where they lost to the Seahawks.

The quarterback recorded 4,707 yards and 46 TDs passing and was honored as the league MVP
