As the build to the FIFA World Cup continues, reigning European champions Spain take on Peru in Puebla, Mexico this Tuesday.
Peru have not qualified for the tournament in North America, but will be hoping to test Spain, who haven’t had a straightforward build to their campaign.
Thanks for the submission!
So can La Roja sign off with a win here?
Peru vs Spain Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
Spain and Peru have faced off twice in the recent past, with Spain coming out on top on both occasions by the same scoreline – 2-1. Their last meeting came back in 2008, curiously right before a major international tournament that Spain won.
Peru have already acted as a warm-up opponent for a team heading to the World Cup this summer, as they overcame minnows Haiti in Miami on Friday. Their failure to qualify for the upcoming tournament means 2018 will remain their only World Cup appearance of the 21st century to date.
Spain are largely considered one of the favourites to win the World Cup thanks in part to their victory in Euro 2024. However, their most recent friendlies haven’t been that impressive, as they stunningly drew 1-1 with Iraq last week.
La Roja did, though, come through what looked like a tricky qualifying group that included both Turkey and Georgia. They are now unbeaten since losing to Colombia in March 2024, a sequence of 29 matches.
Peru’s goalscoring record in their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign was appalling. They only scored six goals in their 18 matches, the lowest of any of the ten CONMEBOL teams involved.
Peru vs Spain Prediction
Spain absolutely flattered to deceive in their recent game against Iraq, and the suspicion was that they were keeping their powder dry for the World Cup.
However, Peru have not looked like the force they were a decade ago in recent times, even taking into account their win over Haiti.
With that in mind, we should probably expect a narrow win for Spain here to take them into the tournament with a win.
Prediction: Peru 0-2 Spain
