With the World Cup now over, Major League Soccer returns as Philadelphia Union and the New York Red Bulls renew acquaintances at Subaru Park on Wednesday. Both sides have been out of competitive action since late May and will be hoping to hit the ground running as domestic football resumes this week.
The 2025 MLS campaign was one for the history books for Philadelphia as they lifted the Supporters’ Shield after registering the second-highest regular-season points tally in club history.
Thanks for the submission!
What has followed this term, however, has been a spectacular collapse, with the Union rooted to the foot of the combined standings after managing just one victory in their opening 15 league matches, while also crashing out of continental competition with a whimper.
Philadelphia headed into the World Cup break on the back of a dramatic 6-4 defeat to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. That result ultimately sealed Bradley Carnell’s fate, with the head coach relieved of his duties just days later as Ryan Richter was appointed on an interim basis.
Just two wins across all competitions between the start of March and the beginning of May underlined the New York Red Bulls’ inconsistent start to the season.
However, they appeared to have found their rhythm under head coach Michael Bradley before the World Cup break, collecting three wins and a draw from their final four matches.
Jorge Ruvalcaba continued his fine start to life in New York last time out, scoring twice in the first half to inspire the Red Bulls to a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City, a result they will be eager to build on this week.
Philadelphia Union vs New York Red Bulls Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- NYRB picked up a narrow 1-0 victory when these two teams last met back in August 2025, ending their 16-game barren streak against Philadelphia.
- Philadelphia are the only MLS side this season yet to win a league game at home.
- The visitors have not kept a clean sheet in their last 15 matches.
- Only Atlanta United (14) and Sporting Kansas City (16) have scored fewer goals in the division this season than the Union (18).
Philadelphia Union vs New York Red Bulls Prediction
Despite failing to win any of their last eight matches, Philadelphia’s home advantage gives them the edge heading into the midweek clash, while they will also hope to benefit from a new-manager bounce.
The Red Bulls arrive in much better form but have struggled on their travels of late, and that could prove costly on Wednesday.
Prediction: Philadelphia Union 2-1 New York Red Bulls
