Qualifying Day 2 Predictions ft. Sloane Stephens vs Anhelina Kalinina; Patrick Kypson vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Players will fight for a spot in the main draw of the Madrid Open 2026 on Day 2 (Tuesday, April 21) of the qualifying rounds. Former top 20 player Donna Vekic was among the notable casualties on the first day of the tournament, going out in the first qualifying round.

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, along with former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, are the biggest names in action on Tuesday. Here’s a quick look at the predictions for all the singles matches lined up on Day 2 of the Madrid Open qualifiers:

#1. Sloane Stephens vs Anhelina Kalinina

Stephens beat Diane Parry 6-2, 6-4 in the first qualifier, while Kalinina scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Marina Bassols Ribera. Both count a second-round finish at the Linz Open as their best result at the WTA level this year, while Kalinina has also won two titles from four finals at the WTA 125 level.

Stephens leads Kalinina 2-1 in the head-to-head. However, the latter’s only win in this match-up came at the Madrid Open 2022. Kalinina also has 25 wins across all levels this year compared to Stephens’ six wins, further tipping the scales in her favor.

Winner: Anhelina Kalinina

Garin dispatched Ugo Blanchet 7-5, 6-4 in the first qualifier, while Damm Jr. beat Andrea Pellegrino 6-0, 7-6 (5). The former improved his record across all levels to 5-8, while the latter’s record for the season now stands at 12-10. This will be the first career meeting between them.

Garin has tasted most of his success on clay. He has a 91-63 record on the surface at just the ATP level, and a 316-192 record across all levels. Damm Jr, has a 36-44 career record on clay, and has won only two of his last 12 matches on the surface. Garin will be favored to win based on their record on clay.

Kypson scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over Moise Kouame in the first qualifying round of the Madrid Open. He improved his record for the season to 10-12 across all levels with the win. Basilashvili beat Stefano Travaglia 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the first qualifier, notching up his ninth win of the year against 13 losses.

Basilashvili leads their rivalry 1-0. He won their previous meeting during the Miami Open 2026 qualifiers in straight sets. Since he has a better record on clay compared to Kypson, Basilashvili will be favored to win once again.
