Home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez, who is 46 years old, fell on the ground near home plate due to heat exhaustion and was forced to exit the game on Monday. The scary incident took place during the fourth inning of the San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds game. Reds trainers ran to assist him immediately following the incident.
The trainers attended to him for several minutes before he stood up with support. A cart was also brought in to help Gonzalez but turned around as the umpire slowly walked on his own with help. This incident delayed the game for 14-15 minutes.

The Cincinnati Reds later revealed that Gonzalez was dealing with heat exhaustion, along with dehydration and elevated blood pressure. However, his blood pressure returned to normal levels after treatment, much to everyone’s relief. He was reported to be resting comfortably following the incident.
First base umpire D.J. Reyburn moved behind the plate for the remainder of the game after Manny Gonzalez’s exit. The crew then ran with three umpires, with Ron Kulpa taking over first base and Tom Hanahan in third. The temperature recorded at Great American Ball Park was 90 degrees with 61 percent humidity.
Padres end losing streak with 5-0 win vs. Reds
The San Diego Padres snapped their three-game skid with a 5-0 win against the Cincinnati Reds, thanks to another solid outing by pitcher Michael King and plenty of offense to back it. This win was crucial as it solidified their position in the NL playoff race.
The wild-card position will depend on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ result against the Philadelphia Phillies later on Monday. Before Monday’s win, the Padres lost three games to the Tampa Bay Rays.
“I don’t think anybody is batting an eye over that series. We have three wild plays three games in a row that usually only happen maybe once every couple weeks,” Padres’ Jake Cronenworth said before the game.
“We have a ball thrown in the center field that leads to five runs. We have an unfortunate injury that leads to four runs and then we literally had the game and a guy runs into the wall and the ball comes out on the other side.”
Despite putting runners on third with one out in both the first and second innings, the Reds failed to capitalize early, leading to their devastating defeat. They went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position after Eugenio Suarez grounded out in the third.
However, Jackson Merrill made a leaping catch at the wall, shutting down Sal Stewart and ending another threat. On the other hand, the Padres opened the fourth inning with six straight hits and scored four runs before recording an out.
