A bizarre case of mistaken identity took over social media during the 2026 Met Gala, with fans confusing Travis Kelce with $45 million-worth (according to Celebrity Net Worth) singer and songwriter Sam Smith.

Kelce and Swift were absent from the star-studded event. But a viral tweet on X caught several eyeballs as a user thought Smith, who was dressed in an elaborate, all-black ensemble, was actually Kelce.

“Travis Kelce looks absurd,” X user CP3 wrote.

There were many X users who fell for the tweet.

“He needs to retire immediately and join RuPaul’s project runway,” wrote an X user.

“This guy is a tough football player?” commented another fan.

Many other fans cleared the air by pointing out that it’s Sam Smith and not the Chiefs star tight end.

“And…whoever really thinks this is Travis Kelce is an idiot. Google, Sam Smith ;),” explained an X user.

“The way I thought it was him fr,” commented another X user.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and his fiancée, Taylor Swift, attended their first red carpet event together in April. After that, the couple did not make any public appearances together.

“Unless there is an emergency, they want to limit outside contact to truly immerse themselves in this once-in-a-lifetime experience before Travis returns to the football field,” The Sun reported according to their private source in March.

Kelce and Swift will kick off their vacation from the Bahamas, then they will head to Europe, Lake Como, France, Croatia, Greece, and parts of Australia and Singapore. Their vacation will go on for three weeks, with Kelce joining the Kansas City Chiefs for training in July.
