Wolves close to drop after Leeds loss as Newcastle lose again

Wolves slipped ever closer to relegation from the Premier League as Leeds eased to a 3-0 win at Elland Road.

Two goals in two minutes ended any hopes of a Wolves win on the road as Leeds warmed up for their FA Cup semi-final next weekend in style.

At the other end of the table Bournemouth’s brilliant run continued with a superb 2-1 win at Newcastle which ramps up the pressure on Eddie Howe.

Wolvers could be relegated from the Premier League this weekend depending on results elsewhere.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had twice gone close before James Justin put Leeds ahead with a brilliant overhead kick after a corner was not dealt with.

And it was 2-0 just 86 seconds later as in-form Noah Okafor swept home at the far post with Wolves’ defence nowhere to be seen.

Karl Darlow produced a sensational save in the second half to keep out a header from ladislav Krejci as Wolves improved.

Rodrigo Gomes poked a good chance wide and Adam Armstrong chipped in a wonderful finish – but the former Southampton man was offside.

There were 10 minutes added on after an injury to the assistant referee and Leeds won a penalty when Calvert-Lewin was barged over by Hugo Bueno.

The England man stepped up and scored in style to make it 3-0.

It is the first time Leeds have won back-to-back games all season and with a nine-point cushion to Tottenham with five matches remaining they look well placed for another season in the top flight.

The Cherries announced this week that in-demand boss Andoni Iraola is leaving at the end of the season – and he could yet guide them to Europe.

Their run stretches to 13 games without defeat after they scored in each half to stun former manager Howe.

Harvey Barnes pulled a shot wide early on for the hosts, who started with William Osula in attack as Howe left big-money signings Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa out.

The visitors were growing into the game and took the lead when winger Rayan burst into the area and put in a lovely low cross which was turned in by Marcus Tavernier.

Evanilson slid a fine chance wide from close range as the home fans grew more and more frustrated – but Osula then drew them level in the second half.

Bruno Guimaraes came off the bench after a spell out injured and started the move that played Osula in behind the Cherries defence to run on and slide home.

Newcastle tails were up but Bournemouth rallied again. A clever cross from the left was headed down by Evanilson and Adrien Truffert was free to slam in his first goal for the club.
