Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom made some noise on X on Friday. He posted a video online and declared his interest in participating in the WNBA as a trans athlete. Freedom made the gesture after the intense debate about the league’s stance on having trans athletes.
The former Boston Celtics center declared himself a WNBA prospect and expressed his interest in playing for the women’s league.

“After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect,” Freedom posted.

“My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion… I’m simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone — the rules that represent the very values many WNBA players and coaches have publicly advocated for.”
Fans took notice of Enes Kanter Freedom after he declared his intention to try to join the WNBA. Even former NBA player Andrew Bogut played along and offered his support to Freedom.
“Good luck @EnesFreedom in your new journey,” Bogut posted on X.
The former Golden State Warriors player has been vocal about his views against having trans athletes in women’s sports. In 2023, Bogut expressed his disappointment over the NBL1 South Women receiving an application from Lexi Rodgers to join the Kilsyth Cobras.
Rodgers is a transgender athlete who gained global attention for attempting to join the women’s basketball league. Although the application was rejected, the one-time NBA champion was still vocal about his disappointment over the matter.
“Word is @NBL1 South Women will have a biological Male playing this upcoming season,” Bogut posted on X.

Clay Travis Reacts to Enes Kanter Freedom’s Announcement
Over the past few days, Clay Travis, the founder of Outkick, has participated in the discussion about the WNBA’s controversy. In some of his posts, Travis voiced his interest in forming an expansion team in the league and having a roster that’s comprised mostly of trans athletes.
On Friday, Travis saw Enes Kanter Freedom’s stunt on X and offered his full support.
“Amazing. Well done,” he posted.
He also argued that Freedom’s announcement has put the league in a tricky situation.
“Now that @EnesFreedom announced he’s a woman & entering the draft @wnba has three options, all bad for them. 1. Deny he’s a woman. (Which means they know what a woman is.) 2. Admit men to league. 3. Announce only those born as women are eligible. Which path? Checkmate,” he posted.
Travis said that if Enes Kanter Freedom is denied, he can sue the WNBA and they will be forced to set a female criteria.
